The first cohort of NCA Apprentices was welcomed this week into the Academy in Derby to their first lesson as part of their Level 2 Apprenticeship Programme in Trowel Trades, all of whom are employed by employers across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. During the lesson, the Apprentices were able to develop their skills in Bricklaying, working towards their first synaptic assessment as part of their qualification. They are all aged 16 to 20 and are building the foundations for their lifelong careers in the construction industry.
All NCA Apprentices will complete their programmes over 12 months, in which time they will then have the opportunity to study towards a Level 3 Apprenticeship qualification to further develop their career. Many of the candidates had successfully completed the NCA Traineeship, which is the starting point of the candidate’s trowel trade career, giving them their CSCS card and have now been offered an Apprenticeship role with the Employer they trained with.
The Trowel-Trade Apprenticeship will allow the Apprentices to hone their skills as Bricklayers and, by the end of the programme, they will be able to complete a wide range of bricklaying activities including brickwork using a variety of bonds and materials and blockwork. A key fundamental of the programme is also to operate safely on a construction site.
Thomas Marples, Head of NCA said, ‘We are delighted for our Apprentices to come into the Academy and study towards their Apprenticeship. The team here at the National Construction Academy believe that the programme will give them an excellent opportunity to excel in bricklaying and it will be a great opportunity to forge exciting careers in the construction sector.’
The National Construction Academy (NCA) was launched earlier this year by its president, Nick Knowles. Our aim is to provide the link for young people looking to get into construction and for employers who have skills gaps that young people could become future experts in.
