The Apprenticeship Levy, 6 months in – A positive new era

Prior to April 1st 2017, training providers and other businesses planned for the Apprenticeship Levy, without truly knowing how the new Government initiative would pan out.

Nearly 6 months in to the initiative, we at 3aaa Apprenticeships, look at the many ways in which the Apprenticeship Levy has benefited organisations across the country and the positive impact it has had on the training and Apprenticeship market and across a range of different sectors.

One of the main positive impacts of the Levy is the increased focus on in-work training opportunities across a range of sectors and industries. Feedback shows that the vast majority of Levy paying employers are embracing the new Apprenticeship standards as they see them as a more relevant way to train their existing workforce and a great opportunity to bring new talent into the business. The new standards put an emphasis on the actual job role of employees and have introduced a more effective and relevant way of learning within the workplace, mirroring the job role itself.

In addition to this, the Levy has moved recruitment strategies up the agenda of larger organisations, urging them to strengthen the pipeline of their talented workforce, whilst giving their existing workforce the extra skills and knowledge to excel in their roles. Training is now viewed as less of a hindrance and more of a benefit as these organisations look to strengthen the core of their business, ensuring that the relevant skills and knowledge run across their workforce, along with their visions and values.

Despite various campaigns to reposition Apprenticeships as a successful alternative to traditional education, they have long been branded as a ‘last resort’. The Apprenticeship Levy is going a long way to changing this way of thinking with organisations, ambitious individuals and parents seeing Apprenticeships as a great way to build a career as well as an excellent way to strengthen a workforce. The commercial sector is now seeing the various benefits of Apprenticeships and are using their Levy to create programmes to run alongside their existing graduate schemes.

Our Leadership & Management programmes are proving to be an extremely popular aspect of the positivity, with many organisations utilising their Levy pot to up-skill current Managers as well as giving potential Managers the platform to excel and progress.

With the introduction of the new standards, professional Apprenticeships are now more effective than ever. These new standards teach employees industry-leading, relevant skills in a range of different professions such as IT & Software, Leadership & Management, Accounting & Financial Services, Digital Marketing, Customer Services & Business Administration and many more.
