Hackference 2014

DCIM100MEDIA

As part of ‘Hackference 2014’ which took place last month, four 3aaa Apprentices from our Leicester and Birmingham Academies had the excellent opportunity to attend the three day technology driven event in the heart of Birmingham.

As part of the first day of the conference our Apprentices were treated to several talks from leading technology specialists. This was followed up by a two day ‘hackathon’, giving the Apprentices the opportunity to improve their coding knowledge and learn new techniques with the aim of providing developers with new and exciting tools to add to their hacking arsenal.

The greatest names in the development world attended the conference at both the front end of the web and backend, with some truly inspirational speakers sharing their tips and advice. The Apprentices had the chance to learn more about developing and valued the opportunity to see some of the amazing guest speakers and to attend ‘The Hack’ on Saturday and Sunday.

Jamar Edwards said “The conference was an awesome experience and gave me the chance to see some great speakers. It also opened my eyes to how broad the IT sector actually is and all the different career possibilities that exist. Taking part in the hackathon allowed me to improve my java script knowledge considerably in a very short space of time and I also got to meet some really useful contacts within the industry”.

Malique Jackson said “I learnt loads from attending the conference and am really grateful to have being given the opportunity by 3aaa to attend and represent them. It was great to see how some of the professionals have come up with innovative solutions to their IT problems and this has really inspired me for the future”.

Jamar and Malique, along with Jacob Oliver and Chris Clifton all represented 3aaa professionally and met with one of our current employers, Sean Price from I BOX Security who was very impressed with them. “We met up with the Apprentices and spoke to some very interesting individuals. Next time we will pop by the Academy to meet more Apprentices and get an insight into their experiences”.

Laura Armfield, the Regional Apprentice Executive for the Midlands said “The feedback we’ve received from the event hosts and our Employer, who sponsored the event, has been fantastic and is testament to how strong the 3aaa Apprentices are and how much they have grown in confidence since starting their Apprenticeships in July. Having spoken to the Apprentices they are really energised by the event and are confident they can use the skills they’ve developed to enhance their careers in the IT industry”

“The Apprentices had not met before and supported one another at the event. All 4 Apprentices have worked extremely hard to gain their employment and were chosen to attend the event due to their hard work and consistent achievement with their Employers.” She added.

You’ll now find a 3aaa Academy in Bedford, Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Cambridge, Chelmsford, Derby, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Milton Keynes, Newcastle, Nottingham, Oxford, Sheffield, Tamworth, Watford and Worcester.

We’ll soon be opening Academies in Croydon, Guildford, Maidstone, Northampton, Norwich, Reading and Southampton.

Case Study – Chill Factor Refrigeration – Nottingham

social media 2

Unsure about how an Apprentice can help transform your business? Chill Factor Refrigeration in Nottingham saw the demand for a Social Media Apprentice within their company in an ever evolving business environment. Luke, a Level 3 Social Media Apprentice from the 3aaa Nottingham Academy proved to be the perfect fit.

Darren Goose, Managing Director of Chill Factor Refrigeration in Nottingham:

We took Luke on as a Social Media and Digital Marketing Apprentice back in March 2014 and at first we weren’t quite sure of how he and the Apprenticeship could benefit our business.

Using the skills and knowledge he had already learnt at the 3aaa Nottingham Academy with his tutor Andy Hughes, as well as working with me to develop the digital marketing plan for the business, Luke spent time setting up Chill Factor on the social media sites that he deemed to be the most suitable. Once we were all set up with polished profiles and a well thought out plan of approach for the new business venture, we began to get noticed and started building up a strong following.

It didn’t take long for us to get noticed by the right people and we were soon approached by our very first customer from social media. COOK, West Bridgford had contacted us to discuss maintenance contracts covering their many on- site freezers and we were more than happy to provide them with a quote. We felt as if we had hit the jackpot when COOK later contacted us to say they were happy with the quote and wished to proceed with the maintenance contract.

Whilst Luke was setting us up on social media, he was also teaching me about the benefits of it and how to get to grips with the interfaces. With Luke’s knowledge and help it didn’t take long for me to become comfortable using the social platforms with my own personal accounts. As an ambitious business owner, I then set about developing my own social media presence and before long I was approached by a likeminded businessman at Belle & Jerome who were looking for someone to take over from their previous Refrigeration & Air Conditioning repair company. After having a meeting and assessing their equipment at both the Beeston and West Brigdford shops, we set out to prove ourselves to Belle & Jerome, providing a swift and quality service. We now share a healthy working relationship with them to date.

Our most recent success comes from EverSo Catering Ltd, who contacted us through Twitter to perform a service on their walk in chiller. After completing the job they asked us to quote to install a new walk in chiller, to move a walk in chiller, install a new walk in freezer and quote for a maintenance contract covering all of their equipment. A truly wholesome result that we are extremely happy about thanks to Social Media.

That’s three long lasting customers for Chill Factor in the space of only 3 months from when Luke started. We are more than clear on the benefits of the Social Media & Digital Marketing Apprenticeship and we look forward to seeing what else it can bring us in the future!”

3aaa go the extra mile to attract young Females onto the Apprenticeship journey

7522178_l

3aaa are delighted to announce an increase in female participants onto our Apprenticeship programmes in 2014 so far. Since the last set of results were recorded in April, the amount of female participants within our Apprenticeships across the country has risen from 11% to 14.26% over just a three month period.

As part of our everyday company mission, 3aaa constantly strives to attract new young females into our Apprenticeships within growing sectors such as IT, Accountancy and Social Media and Digital Marketing.

At 3aaa we identified the need to attract more females onto our programmes and into our target industry sectors. Therefore we launched an exciting initiative for all of our Academies across the country to focus on attracting more female applicants to add to the growing number of males on our programmes currently.

This initiative was kick started on Thursday 15th May 2014 when 3aaa hosted a ‘Women’s Day’ at our Academy in Birmingham. This open day was specifically aimed at celebrating the contributions of women in the Technology, Business, Social Media and Accountancy sectors, including some of our own apprentices that have made their dreams come true through the Apprenticeship route.

This successful event was replicated at a range of our 3aaa Academies as we worked closely with local schools and communities to attract young females onto the Apprenticeship journey. Our aim is to spread the word about how Apprenticeships can be the right choice for females as well as males in a range of ever evolving industries.

Lois Brown, a 3aaa IT Apprentice attended the event in Birmingham and said “I was delighted to receive a prize on Women’s Day and be recognised for my hard work. I found the day inspiring and it has made me even more determined to become an accountant! It is definitely not a career just for men.”

The IT sector, for example predominately employs a male workforce and with more and more IT organizations looking for females within their business, we want to encourage more women into this growing sector. In 2010, only 18% of IT and Telecoms professionals were female, falling from 22% in 2001.*

Apprenticeship Ambassador

In January this year, we were fortunate enough to have 4 of our young Apprentices taking part in the Apprenticeship Ambassador scheme run by Youth Connexions in Hertfordshire. The 4 people were chosen because of their stories in becoming apprentices on our programme. The training for the scheme was spilt over 2 sessions. The first session was designed to give the new Ambassadors an understanding of what being an Apprenticeship Ambassador is and how it can improve them as an individual as well as looking fantastic on their CV’s.

They were given an idea of what would be expected of them and told that they would be asked to talk about their Apprenticeship experience at school or college events throughout Hertfordshire. At the end of the first session they were tasked with creating a power point presentation which would be a personal story about their life and how they became an Apprentice and why they feel it’s a great route and opportunity for young people today. The 2nd session ran two weeks later and each of the new ambassadors had to deliver their presentation.

Each one of them spoke confidently about themselves and they were really enthusiastic about being able to share their knowledge with other potential Apprentices. One of the ambassador’s power point didn’t work on the day, but he was still confident enough to present his story to the rest of the group. At the end of each presentation, the ambassador’s gave each other feedback and looked at ways to add to their presentations. The final part of the presentation was a brief explanation from Connexions on how the ambassadors might be used in the future and the feeling from all involved was that this was a very successful and useful programme.
