Case Study – Software Imaging

logo

Software Imaging, a software company from Oxford are an ambitious company who are constantly looking at different ways to transform their business. Although they never considered recruiting an Apprentice initially, Software Imaging met with the 3aaa Oxford Academy and quickly realised that it was a great opportunity to recruit young people who are passionate about technology, who will receive excellent technical training and who bring new skills and innovation into their business.

Richard Munns – Quality Assurance Manager, Software Imaging

“We have been very impressed with the whole Apprenticeship process so far. Our initial telephone call to 3aaa was extremely informative and as this was the first time Software Imaging were thinking of taking on an Apprentice, 3aaa went through step by step of what was required in a very professional manner. This was an excellent first impression for us knowing that if Software Imaging were going to move forward with the Apprenticeship process we should be speaking to 3aaa to help make things happen.

Our first face to face meeting again followed the same professional approach. 3aaa were able to answer all the questions we had as a company and if they did not have the information to hand, they said they would provide us the details via email, which followed very quickly after our meeting had finished. This again helped us to make the decision to go with 3aaa over other training providers.

All other face to face meetings, telephone conversations were very professional and informative, with all paperwork being completed very efficiently.

We are absolutely delighted with the calibre of the Apprentices we have taken on. The calibre of the applicants did vary with one or two we interviewed. Looking back, we maybe shouldn’t have interviewed these applicants due to their lack of technical experience, but it was all part of the process and we now know what we are looking for if we were to go through the process again.

During Josh & Thomas’s Apprenticeship we hope to set them on their way to being Junior Software Engineers. We don’t think they will be at that level by the end of the first year but we are sure they will almost be there. If all goes well, the opportunity could be there to continue supporting their development via the Level 4 Apprenticeship and work placement for an additional year.

All in all we are very impressed with 3aaa and their processes. As a company they are well-organized and very professional in all areas.”

Thomas Rixon – Level 3 IT Apprentice – Oxford Academy

IMG_2276c

Not sure that University is right for you? Thomas Rixon, a Level 3 IT Apprentice from Oxford started his Apprenticeship after looking at alternative ways to pursue a career within IT. After meeting the team at the 3aaa Oxford Academy and discussing his options, Thomas never looked back…

“When I started at 3aaa and Olamalu, I didn’t know what to expect with regards to what I would be doing on a day to day basis or what everyone would be like. After being here for 3 months I know I have made the right choice and I am really enjoying it. I left school half way through sixth form as I didn’t want to go to university and wanted to work in IT.

So an Apprenticeship seemed the way to go. So far on this Apprenticeship I have learnt some great things. The 3aaa Oxford Academy have taught me a lot more than what I would have learnt at school. They have taught me some basic skills such as taking a computer apart and putting it back together again and running a basic server. They have also taught me some things I had never really heard of before like SLA’s and scopes on DHCP servers. Doing an Apprenticeship gives you more freedom than school and gets you ready for working in the IT industry.

I had been interested in web design and development for a while but didn’t really understand how the whole process worked. Since starting with Olamalu I now know how it all works and each step that goes into designing and developing a website. For someone who didn’t know as much as they wanted, the company have been kind in helping me with this and helped me develop my skills. They have taught me things I always thought about but never understood like how layouts of websites work and the styling that goes along with websites.

One of the things that is best about this Apprenticeship is that when you are working on a website, you know that people are going to see what you have done and it should help them. Along with this I am now getting better at CSS and starting to learn the basics of JavaScript, which I am really enjoying and have always wanted to do. Everyone at Olamalu has helped me a lot with this and I thank them for that.

If someone wants to work with websites, or IT in general, I would recommend they take this Apprenticeship as it will help them learn things that they need to know and help them start their career. I have received a great deal of support every step of the way, which makes an Apprenticeship a great thing to do.”

‘Going the extra mile’ – Connor O’Driscoll – Level 3 IT Apprentice – Birmingham Academy

Connor O'Driscoll - case study photo

Carly Pollard, Apprentice Intake Executive at the 3aaa Birmingham Academy:

Connor O’Driscoll is one of our newly employed Apprentices at the 3aaa Birmingham Academy. However, his story is not your average applicant to Apprentice journey!

Through a partnership I set up at a Sandwell Connexions careers fair in West Bromwich Town Hall at the start of this year, I received a referral from Seetec a few months ago – Connor O’Driscoll. At first it seemed that I would not be able to progress his application as he had already completed some units of our qualification at college. However, his strong enthusiasm and passion for IT was apparent during his telephone interview and so I invited him in for a face-to-face interview. At this stage, it became clear that he was one of a rare breed – a young software developer! As a company we decided he was too good to lose and agreed to begin matching him to Employers.

Before we could begin this process, however, we required a few documents from Connor, such as ID, proof of his National Insurance number and GCSE certificates. This would prove to be a problem as he had left home and lived by a different surname to that on his birth certificate. Connor refused to let anything prevent him from joining our programme though and spent the next few weeks rebuilding his relationship with his mum, chasing his certificates, reordering his National Insurance number and even re-registering his birth under his preferred surname! His commitment to the programme at this stage was already admirable.

Jo Barrett, our Senior Apprenticeship Recruitment Executive at Birmingham, having waited patiently to send Connor’s CV out to companies, arranged two interviews for him. However, after attending the one at Bluetel Solutions and being offered employment with them, he was quick to accept their offer.  Bluetel Solutions is a company that is very particular with their recruitment and only employ those with the highest level of skills and qualities.  Their feedback for Connor was very positive stating that they thought he would fit in with the team well and that they liked his “get-up-and-go” attitude!

When asked how he feels about this opportunity, Connor said “I decided to apply for the Apprenticeship so that I am able to become educated in my chosen field, whilst gaining experience at the same time.  IT is what I have always wanted to do and it really is overwhelming how I have managed to secure my dream job at the age of 17!”

We are all very proud of what Connor has achieved so far and wish him every success with his IT Apprenticeship and beyond!

Case Study – Olamalu

IT laptop world motage

Olamalu, a Web Development company based in Oxfordshire recruited an Apprentice after speaking to 3aaa and realising their excitement about what our Apprenticeship programme could offer their business.

Kate Derman, Co-Founder of Olamalu:

“I am delighted to say that everything is going excellently. When 3aaa contacted us about an Apprentice and we looked at the IT Apprenticeship, we knew that this was the right thing for us to do. We were excited by the possibility of offering a young person the opportunity of working on the team whilst developing their IT skills at the 3aaa Academy, but unsure about how the whole Apprenticeship thing worked. The recruitment was exceptionally smooth. 3aaa did a great job of pre-screening candidates. It also helped that we warmed to Thomas immediately and knew that he would be a great fit for our team, as he has indeed proved to be.

The most important things for us in a candidate were their enthusiasm for IT and web development in particular, their willingness to learn and their ability to operate independently and flexibly. From the start, Thomas has clearly demonstrated the first two. For someone who’s only young, he’s doing well on the last one, and we’re working hard to develop his skills so that he can take on more complex tasks. As a company, we’ve always strongly believed in training our own staff, so for us training Thomas is a normal part of our operations. I think anyone taking on an Apprentice would need to make this sort of commitment to training.

He seems to be enjoying his work at the 3aaa Academy, and it’s good to know that he’s getting an all round education in IT.

I like the way the course is structured with one week at the Academy and then one week with us. This has enabled us to plan his work and develop the skills he needs. We are now looking forward to having him with us full time. “

‘The boost of confidence that I needed’ – Kieron Blackmore – Level 3 IT Apprentice – Cambridge Academy

IMG_20140919_130803

“Since starting with 3aaa, I’ve found with the help of the team I’ve had a massive confidence boost which was a large barrier for me to overcome. On the whole I’ve found everyday life much more positive. I feel I have been given something to aim for and achieve rather than just taking each day as it comes. I had been unemployed for a quite a while and felt like I wasn’t getting anywhere.

The 3aaa Cambridge Academy have been fantastic helping me in my approach to companies and I quickly noticed a 300% increase in responses from Employers when I began working with the team. They spent time with me and gave me some tips and advice about how to prepare for and handle interviews.

The team were always willing to sit down, guide and talk me through any issues that I had and found ways for me to better myself. They talked to me like a real person and didn’t talk down to me. They constantly made me feel like their top priority.

The Academy is fantastic. They taught me how to approach companies professionally, without it feeling like a tedious endeavour. I am now working as an IT Apprentice for Studio 24 in Cambridge and couldn’t be happier. My friends and family have noticed a great change in me and have commented on how much happier I am. I am grateful for this fantastic opportunity and intend to stay on after my Level 3 apprenticeship and progress to Level 4!”

Hackference 2014

DCIM100MEDIA

As part of ‘Hackference 2014’ which took place last month, four 3aaa Apprentices from our Leicester and Birmingham Academies had the excellent opportunity to attend the three day technology driven event in the heart of Birmingham.

As part of the first day of the conference our Apprentices were treated to several talks from leading technology specialists. This was followed up by a two day ‘hackathon’, giving the Apprentices the opportunity to improve their coding knowledge and learn new techniques with the aim of providing developers with new and exciting tools to add to their hacking arsenal.

The greatest names in the development world attended the conference at both the front end of the web and backend, with some truly inspirational speakers sharing their tips and advice. The Apprentices had the chance to learn more about developing and valued the opportunity to see some of the amazing guest speakers and to attend ‘The Hack’ on Saturday and Sunday.

Jamar Edwards said “The conference was an awesome experience and gave me the chance to see some great speakers. It also opened my eyes to how broad the IT sector actually is and all the different career possibilities that exist. Taking part in the hackathon allowed me to improve my java script knowledge considerably in a very short space of time and I also got to meet some really useful contacts within the industry”.

Malique Jackson said “I learnt loads from attending the conference and am really grateful to have being given the opportunity by 3aaa to attend and represent them. It was great to see how some of the professionals have come up with innovative solutions to their IT problems and this has really inspired me for the future”.

Jamar and Malique, along with Jacob Oliver and Chris Clifton all represented 3aaa professionally and met with one of our current employers, Sean Price from I BOX Security who was very impressed with them. “We met up with the Apprentices and spoke to some very interesting individuals. Next time we will pop by the Academy to meet more Apprentices and get an insight into their experiences”.

Laura Armfield, the Regional Apprentice Executive for the Midlands said “The feedback we’ve received from the event hosts and our Employer, who sponsored the event, has been fantastic and is testament to how strong the 3aaa Apprentices are and how much they have grown in confidence since starting their Apprenticeships in July. Having spoken to the Apprentices they are really energised by the event and are confident they can use the skills they’ve developed to enhance their careers in the IT industry”

“The Apprentices had not met before and supported one another at the event. All 4 Apprentices have worked extremely hard to gain their employment and were chosen to attend the event due to their hard work and consistent achievement with their Employers.” She added.

You’ll now find a 3aaa Academy in Bedford, Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Cambridge, Chelmsford, Derby, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Milton Keynes, Newcastle, Nottingham, Oxford, Sheffield, Tamworth, Watford and Worcester.

3aaa and Riskex – Working together to change the lives of young people

Apprenticeships_GetIn Lockup

riskex-logo

Ever since the start of the partnership in October last year, 3aaa have enjoyed a successful relationship with Riskex, the market leading provider of software and cloud based systems for the UK who are based in Bedfordshire.

Riskex share 3aaa’s passion for wanting to develop the future generation of young professionals and believe that taking on Apprentices and giving them the chance to begin a career in IT is the best way to do this.

The Apprentices begin their journey in a 3aaa Academy studying towards their Level 3 Extended Diploma in ICT systems and principles, Level 3 Diploma in Professional Competence for IT and Telecoms Professional and Level 2 functional Skills in IT, Maths and English.

Harry Patel, Business Management and Head of Marketing at Riskex said “3aaa worked quickly and efficiently with us at a time where we were keen to take on an ambitious Apprentice with a vision of them progressing into software development. 3aaa took the time to find the right Apprentice that would not only fit the business but have the most impact on the company.”

“We proceeded by taking on our first Apprentice Chris Galvin as 1st line IT support to ease him into the business. As Chris was progressing through the company, this left a position open for another 1st line IT support, which was quickly taken up by another 3aaa Apprentice, Rohan George, who is progressing equally as well” He added.

Meet the Apprentices:

Christopher Galvin

“After finishing my A-Levels, I was unsure as to how to start my career and how I could try to utilise as much of my potential as possible. At first, I decided to go on to study at University, but later found out that this was not the best route for me. I then decided to look at apprenticeships within IT, where my passion lies and with the help of 3aaa’s Technology Apprenticeship programme, they we able to find a role best suited for me; an IT Systems Developer role working for Riskex.

At first I was very unsure as to what to expect from the job, company and my working colleagues. Being the first Apprentice here, I am sure Riskex were very unsure of what to expect from me! So it was a learning curve for us both. After a few weeks of working at Riskex, I started to feel less like an Apprentice and more like a full time employee. As my confidence grew and responsibilities increased, my level of technical expertise grew also.

An Apprenticeship with 3aaa and Riskex is very challenging, but the amount of support I have received to overcome the challenges has been fantastic. The Apprenticeship has allowed me to trial a variety of aspects of IT within a business environment and gain vital work experience.”

Rohan George

“After spending some time in higher education and contemplating University, I realised my efforts would be better spent in pursuing an Apprenticeship opportunity. As a more kinaesthetic learner, I believed an Apprenticeship would work well with my more hands on approach to tasks. After contacting and meeting with 3aaa, I was introduced to Riskex, a market leading provider of business solutions, software development systems; and cloud-based computing IT company, and after an interview I became the companies second IT Apprentice.

I didn’t know what to expect and was worried how my ‘Apprentice’ status would minimise the amount of input I would have on particular tasks within the business. With no real work experience in an IT environment, I was concerned that I would be underestimated and the tasks given to me would be fairly basic, but this was not the case as after training I was involved in the company’s IT process straight away.

Having been at Riskex a while now, a lot has happened and I now feel like an employee rather than an Apprentice. We have a great working environment, people who support my needs and I am constantly being challenged. My knowledge of IT is widening every day and I am very grateful to have an opportunity to work at Riskex where they invest so much time into the future of young people like myself.”

3aaa Milton Keynes – Rebecca Brooks – Recruitment Executive

“Riskex have been one of the best Employers I have worked with. They are a successful company that understand the importance and benefits of taking on Apprentices to their business. They want to offer an Apprentice the best possible start in their career. They support, teach and nurture their Apprentices through the ranks and offer long term career prospects to the right candidate. This is exactly what Apprenticeships are about and I look forward to continuing the great partnership with a company that shares our beliefs”.

3aaa Sponsors Derbyshire Brain Game

young professionals

A team of staff and clients from 3aaa joined more than 250 people at the Derbyshire Brain Game which was held at the Roundhouse yesterday evening. This event, which raises money for the Marie Curie charity, is now in its third year and had, prior to last night, raised more than £55,000 for the charity. The County Patron of Marie Curie is Willie Tucker, Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire and friend of 3aaa.

As Gold Sponsors of what is In essence a ‘posh pub quiz’ 3aaa started strongly and led the competition at the end of round two. A poor performance during the art and literature round meant that we finished in 9th place out of 26 at the end of the quiz.

Most importantly the event raised an additional £28,000 for Marie Curie which equates to more than 15,000 hours of end of life care from Marie Curie Nurses.

Accreditation for our Information, Advice and Guidance

4 young mixed race thumbs up

In 2013 we were successful in achieving Matrix Standard accreditation. This standard is a quality standard for organisations to assess and measure the way that they offer advice and support services. These services are so important as they impact on the decisions that people make around their career and their learning.

This week we were reassessed and have received really positive feedback and have been re-accredited. The main feedback was:

1) That we are responsive to changes in the advice and guidance area

2) That our policies, processes and procedures are being maintained and where needed improved

We’re really pleased to have been re-accredited as information, advice and guidance is at the heart of much of our work here at 3aaa. We’re committed to delivering life changing opportunities for young people through outstanding teaching, learning and assessment We invest significant effort in making sure that our Applicants and Apprentices receive the best information to enable them to make the best decisions about their careers and their training. This re-accreditation proves that we’re doing what we set out to do.
