A partnership between the National Skills Academy for IT, training provider, NITP, and BT has created 135 apprenticeships, to add to the 300 already successfully underway since October 2012. Nearly 80% of the new apprentices’ employers are small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and over 70% of them have not recruited an apprentice before.
The IT Skills Academy has also launched a new, free guide for employers, to demystify the process of hiring an IT apprentice for the first time. It is available online, while print copies have been sent to businesses across England.
Patrick Beasley, Apprenticeships Project Director, National Skills Academy for IT, says: “IT apprenticeships give employers the chance to mould young people to their specific needs; to give them both technical and soft skills; and to recruit loyal and affordable new staff with a real desire to succeed. But many employers aren’t aware that IT apprenticeships exist or think it’ll be too complex to hire one. We’re already starting to change that perception through our partnership with BT and NITP, and we aim to continue via this new guide.”
The 135 new apprentices will receive training that is quality assured by BT and delivered by NITP – one of the IT Skills Academy’s approved training partners – at its further education colleges in 11 English towns and cities.
Manchester is the latest area to join the programme and one of the companies to benefit there is IT consultancy, JAC2, based in Warrington, Cheshire. Jan Chapman, Computer Consultant at the firm, says: “We were keen to find a young person who would be willing to learn. I would definitely advise other companies to think about this approach.”
Peter Marples, Director, NITP, adds: “With high university tuition fees and graduate unemployment, many school leavers are seeking out apprenticeships as they get their results this summer. In fact, there are currently 17 applications for every IT apprentice vacancy, making them among the most popular with young people. This gives companies that need skilled technology staff a real opportunity to bring fresh energy and talent on board.”
The new guide for employers covers what apprenticeships are, the business benefits, how recruitment works, and the incentives available. It also features employer success stories, with video interviews and in-depth case studies.
The partnership has received co-investment from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills via the Growth and Innovation Fund.
